The Rockdale Institute of Advanced Technology is a program of study that introduces students to the broad career opportunities in today’s digital workforce. The program helps to provide students with personal, analytical, technical and communication skills needed for success.

Program Overview.

The Institute of Advanced Technology offers a curriculum that links rigorous core academic courses to computer science and video game design courses. The program incorporates Georgia Professional Standards in a curriculum that includes network services, information technology support and services, programming and software development, and interactive digital media systems.

Courses and course progression are subject to change to meet industry and post-secondary educational standards and/or requirements. Students must follow the course progression and maintain passing grades to remain in the program.


Course Sequence.

Introduction to Software Technology.

THEN.

Programming Pathway:
Computer Science Principles, Programming Apps, Programming, Cloud Computing, End of Pathway Certification Test.

OR

Web & Digital Design Pathway: Digital Design, Web Design, Dual Enrollment or Internship, End of Pathway Certification Test.


Components for Student Success.

The students will complete a pathway as posted above beginning with Introduction to Digital Technology. All courses must be taken in order and upon completion of the courses, the students will sit for the End of the Pathway Assessment, Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA): Software Development or Certified Internet Web Professional (CIW): Site Development Associate.

The goal of the Institute is to prepare its graduates to move forward with the technical ability to pursue post-secondary educational opportunities at technical centers and/or four-year colleges and universities. These students will have multiple options upon graduation due to the rigor and relevance of these pathways.


Programming Pathway.

The Programming Pathway is one of six pathways in the Information Technology Cluster. This cluster builds linkages in IT occupations for entry level, technical, and professional careers related to the design, development, support and management of hardware, software, and multimedia and systems integration services. Careers in Programming and Software Development involve the design, development, implementation and maintenance of computer systems and software, requiring knowledge of computer operating systems, programming languages and software development. People with expertise in programming and software development work with cutting-edge technologies to develop tomorrow’s products for use by businesses and consumers.

Web & Digital Design Pathway.

The Web & Digital Design pathway is one of six pathways in the Information Technology Cluster. This cluster builds linkages in IT occupations for entry level, technical, and professional careers related to the design, development, support and management of hardware, software, and multimedia and systems integration services. The Web & Digital Design Pathway is designed for high school students to understand, communicate, and adapt to a digital world as it impacts their personal life, society, and business world. Exposure to foundational knowledge in hardware, software, programming, web design, IT support, and networks are taught in a computer lab with hands-on activities and project-focused tasks. Students will not only understand the concepts, but apply their knowledge to situations and defend their actions/decisions/choices through the knowledge and skills acquired in this course.


Application, Eligibility, and Lottery.

RCPS will use an electronic application process for School Choice programs. No paper applications will be accepted. Students may apply for one traditional School Choice program only.

The application window opens November 10 - December 15, 2023

The online application will be available on the district website at: rockdaleschools.org/specialtyandchoice

Only complete applications will be accepted.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Students must meet the student registration requirements for Rockdale County Public Schools.
• Students who change schools after day one of their 9th grade year may not be eligible for varsity sports, literary competitions or One Act Play. All GHSA eligibility rules apply for all programs.

Lottery:

In the event there are more eligible applicants  than space available, students will be selected via a random lottery drawing. If needed, a lottery will be held in January.

Welcome to the Institute of Advanced Technology at Rockdale County High School. Our program is based on a rigorous curriculum which provides students with the opportunity to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to be successful in post-secondary education and careers in computer programming, video game design, software development, web design, digital design and other informational technology courses. Our students are able to meet industry standards and are creating innovative products at the level of those produced by experts in the field. The program is a fantastic opportunity for students with an interest in Advanced Technology. We are excited about your child joining this unique specialty program.
