Credit recovery for high school students is a program that allows students to retake and earn credit for a course they previously failed so they can stay on track for graduation.
These programs are commonly offered through:
- Summer school
- Online learning platforms
- Evening school
- Credit recovery labs during the school day (Offered to Juniors and Seniors only)
How It Works
Instead of repeating the entire course from the beginning, students typically focus on:
- The standards or assignments they did not master
- Missed assessments
- Key learning objectives required to pass the class
Once completed successfully, the student earns the academic credit needed toward graduation requirements.
Students will need credit recovery for failing a class.
A student who failed...
- 9th Grade Literature A
- Algebra I
- Biology
- American Government
...may take those courses in summer school or through other credit recovery opportunities during the school year to recover the lost credits.
Important Distinction
Credit recovery is different from:
- Getting ahead academically (taking extra classes for advancement)
- Grade replacement (raising a GPA)
- Initial credit courses (taking a class for the first time)
The goal of credit recovery is specifically to help students recover missed graduation credits.
You can recover any missing credits with the options listed below.
